Arethousa Does Deco

I designed this necklace to go with several Art Deco beads that I made by hand, and a ceramic pendant depicting the mythological Greek nymph Arethousa. The large beads are dyed jet shell, with purple and pink cat’s eye beads, glass beads, black lacquer lentil beads and a handmade wirework clasp. The pendant is a dark taupe colour antiqued in black and it reminded me of Deco designs. I’ve always liked the look of black with pink tones, and I’ve used sea green and teal/blue in this to tie in with water and fish and Arethousa.

Today, I was fiddling around with beads while I worked on some bead embroidery, and I got to playing with earrings to see which ones I had that went well with this necklace (which is for sale on my web site.) I am not fond of what I call “matchy-match” jewellery sets, as I think that looks terribly hokey and contrived, so I work with shades and tints to tie things together. Two of the earring sets do actually have beads that are in the necklace, but it’s the colour that I like to coordinate to get a successful set.

Matchy-match is boring, one must have some zip in life!
